Step into Winter with the Right Shoes

Walking in snow. We Fix Feet, Beeston and Ilkeston

Winter!  It’s a time of snuggly scarves, steaming mugs of hot chocolate, and breathtakingly frosty mornings.  But as beautiful as winter is, it comes with its own challenges for our feet!  Icy pavements, slushy paths, and chilly winds can test even the biggest fans of the Great British frosty season.

It's that icy time of the year when the correct footwear can make all the difference in our daily lives.  So how do we tenderly cradle our feet in warmth, keep them dry amidst rain and snow, and ensure a good fit?  The answers are all about our choices at the shoe shop!

We say the journey to foot comfort and health during winter is paved with three golden rules: waterproofing, good fit, and warm insulation.  So, let’s unfold the mystery surrounding the perfect pair of winter shoes!

Waterproof Wonder

Splashing through puddles or trudging through fresh snow, a waterproof shoe acts like a loyal knight shielding your feet from winter's cold and wet onslaughts of the icy rain.  The waterproof outer skin between your tender feet and the harsh, wet outdoors is crucial.

A waterproof shoe is layered with a special membrane that keeps out the water yet lets your feet breathe.  With dry feet, you evade the dreaded chill that nips at your toes and keep discomfort and illnesses like chilblains and athlete's foot at bay.

Moreover, we stress the importance of dry feet to maintain skin integrity and prevent fungal infections.  Wet feet can also allow for the easy formation of painful blisters.  So, having sturdy, waterproof shoes is like having a trusty umbrella during a downpour.  They’re your faithful winter companion.

Tip: Look for shoes labelled 'waterproof' rather than 'water-resistant' to offer better protection.

The Perfect Fit

A well-fitting shoe is like a heartfelt hug for your feet.  Too loose, and your feet move too much with every step; too tight, and they will pinch!  A good fit ensures your feet are comfortably supported with enough room to wiggle your toes yet snug enough to feel secure.

A well-fitting shoe supports good foot health.  It lays the foundation for a proper walking gait, keeping issues like calluses, corns, and other foot ailments at a distant shore.  Moreover, the right fit distributes your weight evenly, ensuring your feet aren’t weary even after a day’s winter wandering or the daily on-foot work commute.

Tip: Always try shoes on in the afternoon.  Our feet swell during the day, so this will ensure a comfy fit from morning to night!

Warmth & Insulation from the Cold

Imagine a soft, warm blanket enveloping your feet as they brave the cold outdoors.  That’s what a well-insulated shoe feels like.  Thermal lining or wool interiors create a tender haven for your feet, keeping the cold at bay.  A warm, well-insulated shoe is more than just a comfort, it’s a necessity to prevent chilblains and to keep the blood circulating well in your lower extremities.

What do I look for?

Now, the quest for the perfect winter shoe might seem like an adventure in itself.  Fear not, for we do have a few good examples.  For instance, brands like Clarks and Merrell offer a great range of waterproof and insulated shoes.  Their designs ensure a snug fit, all while cradling your feet in warmth.

Moreover, if you’re seeking a union of style and function, look no further than Dr Martens’ waterproof collection.  They testify that style shouldn’t need to compromise comfort.

Each step you take in the correct choice of winter shoe is a step filled with comfort, protection, and a joyous sigh from your grateful feet..

Tip: Wool or fleece linings are a great choice. They provide warmth without making the shoe too heavy.

Remember… Remember…

Winter is a time of magic and beauty but sometimes a chill.  However, with the right shoes (It’s worth investing in a good pair or two) this winter, you can conquer it all with flair and warmth.  Treat your feet, and take the time to reward them with the comfort, warmth, and protection they deserve.  Remember, your shoes are more than just a fashion statement; they shield against the British winter's frosty fury.

So, my fellow winter enthusiasts, think waterproof, good fit, and insulation from the winter weather next time you're out shoe shopping!

A supportive insole may sometimes be necessary, adding additional arch support, heel stability and forefoot cushioning.   Talk to our friendly team about the “Sidas 3Feet” range of insoles we stock at our We Fix Feet
