What Causes Foot and Heel Pain?... And How Can Shockwave Therapy Help?

If you’ve got foot and ankle pain, stiffness or an ache – it’s very tempting to think that it’s nothing, that it will go away on its own.

Or, you might pass it off as having just over done it, or that it’s just a “ache” or a bit of stiffness that “everyone” your age suffers from…

There’s no obvious reason why it happened – but it doesn’t seem to be
shifting and its been there a good while now.

If that’s happening to you, you’re not alone – and we hear this type of
thing all the time. In fact, long term foot and ankle pain is THE most common problems that we regularly see at We Fix Feet.

6 Reasons To Choose We Fix Feet

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions About Shockwave Therapy

What is shockwave therapy?

Shockwave therapy, also known as ESWT, is a non-surgical treatment that uses acoustic waves to stimulate healing in irritated or slow-to-recover tissues such as tendons, fascia and other soft tissue structures.

At We Fix Feet, it is commonly used as part of a wider treatment plan for conditions like plantar heel pain, Achilles tendon pain and other musculoskeletal problems where pain has persisted.

It is designed to help reduce pain, improve function and encourage the body’s natural repair process.

Shockwave therapy works by delivering controlled acoustic waves into the affected area, which stimulates the tissue and encourages the body’s natural healing response.

Shockwave therapy can help improve local blood flow, influence pain signalling, and support repair in tissues that have become irritated, overloaded or slow to heal.

At We Fix Feet, it is usually used alongside a broader rehabilitation plan rather than as a stand-alone fix.

Shockwave therapy can be uncomfortable during treatment, particularly if the area is already very irritated, but it is usually brief and manageable.

Most people describe it as a sharp, intense sensation rather than pain that they cannot tolerate, and the intensity can often be adjusted within the session.

At We Fix Feet, the aim is to deliver an effective treatment while keeping it tolerable for the patient.

A shockwave therapy session itself is usually quite short, often around 10 to 15 minutes of actual treatment time, depending on the area being treated and the clinical plan.

The full appointment may usually be longer if it includes assessment, review, or rehabilitation advice alongside the shockwave treatment.

At We Fix Feet, it is typically delivered within a half-hour appointment, as part of a structured treatment pathway rather than in isolation.

Shockwave therapy is commonly used for stubborn musculoskeletal conditions such as plantar heel pain, Achilles tendinopathy, and some tendon or soft tissue problems that have not settled with simpler measures alone.

At We Fix Feet, it is typically used where pain has become persistent and where loading, rehabilitation and tissue healing all need support.

Suitability depends on the condition, how long it has been present, and the wider treatment plan.

Shockwave therapy is generally considered low risk, but some people may notice short-term soreness, redness, mild swelling or bruising in the treated area afterwards.

These effects are usually temporary, but shockwave is not suitable for everyone, so a proper assessment is important to check for any contraindications and make sure it is the right treatment for you.

At We Fix Feet, suitability is reviewed as part of the assessment and wider treatment plan.

Some people notice improvement within a few weeks, but shockwave therapy often works gradually, with changes building over the course of treatment and the weeks that follow.

This is because it is designed to stimulate healing rather than simply mask symptoms on the day, although it can produce an immediate analgesic effect.  Collagen regeneration, however, can take at least 12 weeks.

At We Fix Feet, it is usually set within a wider rehabilitation plan, so results depend on the condition, how long it has been present, and how well the full plan is followed.

A good candidate for shockwave therapy is usually someone with a persistent tendon or soft tissue problem, such as plantar heel pain or Achilles pain, that has not improved enough with rest, activity changes or simpler treatment alone.

Shockwave therapy is often most useful when the issue has become ongoing rather than very new, and when it can be combined with the right rehabilitation plan.

At We Fix Feet, suitability is determined after assessment to ensure the diagnosis, the tissue involved, and the wider treatment goals all fit.
