School Shoes - Stepping Up Your Game!

So, school's are about to reopen for the autumn period, huh?  That means it's time for the yearly shopping spree for new uniforms and, of course, the ever-important school shoes.  But here's a secret - many kids out there are shuffling around in shoes that don't fit quite right.  This can cause all sorts of bother, from hurting your feet to causing some serious foot problems.  So, let's jump into the know-how of picking the perfect pair of school shoes!

Finding the Perfect Pair..

Sneaky slip-ons?  Nope, not your best friend.  Go for shoes that have laces, straps, or the cool velcro.  They're like seatbelts for your feet, keeping your shoes nice and snug.  It's also good to have shoes that give your feet a little bit of support.

You know how they say 'always ask for help'? Well, in a shoe shop, you should ask for a shoe fitter - they're pros at finding you the perfect size.  Did you know both your feet might not be the same size?  It surprises a lot of people!  So, get them both measured for the best fit.

Now, your kids' new shoes shouldn't hug their toes too tight.  There should be about a thumb's width between their toes and the end of the shoe.  This way, their feet have room to grow and wiggle around.

Trainers are cool and comfy, but make sure they're the right size.  Some are made for specific sports and aren't the best for everyday wear.  And remember, keep the plimsolls for P.E.!

The heels shouldn't be more than 4cm high, even lower for younger children..  The heel needs to have a broad base and be made of a material that's good at absorbing shocks.

Go for shoes made of natural materials like leather - they're the best!  And check inside the shoe for any irritating seams or stitches.

Now, the toe area of the shoe should be roomy enough to let your toes move freely, and the shoe should fit well around your heel without being too tight or too loose.

Feet First..

Taking care of your feet is super important.  Think about it, they're your body's own personal transport system!  Barefoot is best - it helps the muscles in your feet to grow stronger and allows air to circulate around your feet.

Always wash and dry your feet properly, especially between your toes.  You don't want a case of itchy, fungal athlete's foot from sweaty feet!

Trimming toenails is like trimming hair - you want to keep it neat and tidy.  Cut them straight across - don’t cut down the sides - that's how you get nasty ingrown toenails if the tiniest spike is left behind.

Your socks matter too!  Tight socks can squeeze your feet and reduce circulation.  So, go for socks made of natural fibres like wool or cotton that let your feet breathe.

Always keep an eye on your shoes for any signs of unusual wear and tear.  If you see anything strange, like severe wear on the inside or outside of the heel, you might need to arrange an appointment with us.

New shoes can sometimes cause blisters and sores.  Also, check your feet for any red pressure marks, especially after you've been wearing your shoes for a while.

Keep in mind, foot problems can become big problems if left alone.  So if you have any concerns, ask for help.  There's no such thing as a silly question, promise!
