Ignored Your Fungal Nail or Verruca? Here Is What to Do Now
If you have been quietly hoping a discoloured toenail or a sore patch on the sole of your foot would sort itself out, you are in good company. The vast majority of people who come to us with fungal nails and verrucas have been aware of something for quite a while before they book an appointment.
Life is busy; it is not causing serious pain, and there is always something more pressing than making a podiatry appointment.
The reason I am writing this post is not to make anyone feel bad for waiting. It is simply to say: at whatever point you are starting from, treatment is possible, and arriving late is absolutely not a reason to keep waiting.
The important thing is what you do next. Whether the problem has been there for six weeks or several years, the first step is simply understanding what is there and what treatment pathway is appropriate.
What happens when fungal nail infections are left
A fungal nail infection does not plateau and wait for you to be ready. Left without treatment, the fungus gradually works from the tip of the nail toward the base, thickening the nail, changing its colour and potentially spreading to adjacent nails and the surrounding skin.
This does not happen overnight; the process is slow, and that is part of why it is easy to normalise. But over months and years, what might have been a small infection affecting one corner of a nail can become something that substantially affects several nails.
Early change
A small area of yellowing, dullness or change near the edge of the nail.
More established
The infection progresses further across the nail and may cause increasing thickness or discolouration.
Potential spread
Adjacent nails or surrounding skin may also become involved over time.
The practical implication: the longer an infection has been established, the more laser treatment sessions are typically needed, and the longer the overall timeline before a clear nail grows through.
Six weeks
An infection caught early has had less time to become established throughout the nail.
Three years
A long-standing infection represents a different treatment journey and may require more time and treatment.
Both are treatable. They are just different journeys.
What happens when verrucas are left
Verrucas do sometimes clear on their own, particularly in children and younger adults whose immune systems mount a response to the HPV virus. This can take months or even years, and there is no reliable way to predict whether your immune system will do so.
What does not tend to happen is spontaneous resolution in established cases that have been present for more than a year or two, or in adults with more active immune systems.
In those cases, the virus has generally settled into a comfortable local equilibrium, and it tends to stay there until something actively disrupts it.
Single verruca in a child
A single, recently acquired verruca in a child can be a reasonable candidate for watchful waiting alongside sensible hygiene measures.
Cluster in an adult
A cluster of verrucas in an adult that has been present for two years and shows no sign of changing is a different picture, and active treatment is a more sensible route.
What treatment looks like at a late stage
I understand that part of what puts people off booking is uncertainty about what they will be told.

K-Laser Fungal Nail Treatment
For established fungal nail infections, we use K-Laser fungal nail treatment — targeted laser energy that reaches the nail bed and targets fungal cells without any incision or medication.
A more progressed infection will usually need more sessions than an early one, and the timeline before a fully clear nail grows through will be longer, but the process is the same.
K-Laser Verruca Treatment
For verrucas that have not responded to home treatment or have been present for a significant time, K-Laser verruca treatment is typically the most effective route.
It works on established lesions, and we can treat multiple verrucas in a single session where necessary.
