Still Feeling A Little Confused About Your Foot Condition And Don't Know What To Do?

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the difference between a podiatrist, a chiropodist and a Foot Health Practitioner?

A podiatrist is a HCPC-registered allied health professional trained to assess, diagnose and treat conditions affecting the feet, ankles and lower limbs. The term ‘chiropodist’ is a old title that could have been achieved at both Diploma and Degree level.  The chiropody qualification has now been superseded by BSc(Hons) university degree in Podiatry. A Foot Health Practitioner provides routine foot care but does not have the same statutory regulated scope of practice as an HCPC-registered podiatrist.  Whilst still qualified to competently undertake footcare, they cannot supply nor administer local anaesthetic and other prescription medications, such as codeine pain relief or antibiotics.  At We Fix Feet, we match you with the most appropriate clinician for your needs.

Routine podiatry and foot healthcare can help with corns, calluses, thickened nails, ingrowing toenails, cracked heels, fungal nails, painful skin lesions and general foot discomfort. We also assess general foot health and identify problems that may require more specialised treatment before they become more serious.

Yes. Many foot problems develop gradually and are easier to manage before they become painful. Regular foot care can help maintain comfort, mobility and independence while reducing the risk of complications.  Think of it as going to the dentist for a check-up and a scale and polish, rather than an extraction or root canal work.

How often you need treatment depends on your foot health, medical history and lifestyle. Many patients benefit from appointments every 6 to 10 weeks, although some require more or less frequent care. Your clinician will recommend an interval based on your individual needs rather than a fixed schedule.  However, many of our patients schedule their visits throughout the year at 6, 8 or 10 week intervals.

Your first, initial appointment begins with a discussion about your symptoms, medical history and goals. Your clinician will examine your feet, explain any findings in plain English and carry out any appropriate treatment. If further investigations or specialist care are required, we’ll discuss all suitable options with you.

In many cases, yes. Early treatment can reduce pressure points, improve nail and skin health and identify changes before they progress into more complex problems. Prevention is often simpler and more comfortable than treating an advanced condition.  Underlying medical conditions such as diabetes or arthritis can put you into a higher risk category for more complex problems if igored.

Absolutely. As we age, changes in skin, nails, circulation and mobility can make looking after our feet more difficult. Routine podiatry helps many older adults stay comfortable, active and independent.

Yes, although people with diabetes or poor circulation often require more careful assessment. Looking after your feet is particularly important if you have reduced sensation or slower healing. If necessary, we’ll recommend the most appropriate level of ongoing care.

Routine podiatry should not be painful. Some treatments may cause brief discomfort, particularly if a painful corn or ingrowing nail is present, but we work carefully to keep you as comfortable as possible throughout your appointment.

Yes. In many cases these problems can be treated during the same appointment. If we identify an underlying cause, such as footwear or biomechanics, we’ll explain this and discuss ways to reduce the likelihood of the problem returning.

Yes. Removing painful skin lesions, managing thickened nails and improving overall foot health can make walking and standing more comfortable for many people, helping them stay active and enjoy everyday life.

Thickened or painful toenails can result from trauma, fungal infection, ageing or other medical conditions. Rather than trying to cut them yourself, it’s best to have them professionally assessed so the underlying cause can be identified and the most appropriate treatment recommended.

Most routine podiatry appointments last around 20 – 30 minutes, depending on the treatment required. We’ll always allow enough time to assess your concerns, provide treatment and answer your questions.  We schedule routine podiatry consultations and treatment within a 30 minute appointment slot

If pain persists, keeps returning, affects your daily activities or you are unsure of the cause, it’s sensible to seek professional advice. Early assessment often prevents small problems from spreading and becoming larger ones.

Simple measures such as moisturising your feet, wearing well-fitting footwear, checking your feet regularly and following any advice given by your clinician can make a significant difference. We’ll provide personalised recommendations based on your needs.

We combine experienced clinicians, modern technology and a patient-centred approach to deliver evidence-informed care. Our focus is not only on treating today’s problem but also on helping you understand why it occurred and how to reduce the risk of it returning.

NHS podiatry services provide an important service and prioritise patients according to clinical need. Eligibility and long waiting times vary between areas, and some treatments available in private podiatry clinics may not be routinely available on the NHS. Many people choose private podiatry for quicker access, greater appointment flexibility and a wider range of treatment options.

If you’re unsure, start with a routine podiatry appointment. We’ll assess your feet, explain our findings and, if a specialist assessment or treatment would provide a better solution, we’ll discuss your options and guide you towards the most appropriate next step.
