Struggling With Ankle Pain?

What’s Really Causing It — and How We Treat It

If your ankle feels sore, stiff, swollen, or painful when you walk, stand, exercise, or first get moving in the morning, you’re not alone.

Ankle pain is one of the most common problems we see — and the good news is, most ankle conditions are highly treatable once the true cause is identified.

At We Fix Feet, we don’t just treat where it hurts — we diagnose why your ankle pain keeps returning. Whether it’s ligament damage, tendon overload, joint stiffness, poor foot mechanics, or footwear issues, we create a clear treatment plan focused on long-term recovery, not temporary relief.

What Is Ankle Pain?

Ankle pain refers to discomfort, stiffness, swelling, or instability around the ankle joint and surrounding structures, including ligaments, tendons, muscles, and bones.

It can develop suddenly after an injury or gradually over time due to overuse, poor biomechanics, or underlying conditions.
Symptoms may include pain when walking, swelling, reduced movement, weakness, or a feeling that the ankle may “give way.”

Ankle pain affects people of all ages — from active individuals and athletes to those who spend long hours on their feet or have existing foot and joint issues.

How We Treat Ankle Pain

At We Fix Feet, we provide targeted, evidence-based treatments to reduce pain, restore movement, and prevent future injury, including:

  • Shockwave Therapy – Stimulating tissue repair and reducing chronic inflammation
  • Custom Orthotics – Correcting foot mechanics and unloading stressed ankle structures
  • Class IV Laser Therapy – Accelerating healing and reducing pain and swelling
  • Stretching & Strengthening Programmes – Improving stability, mobility, and strength
  • Footwear Advice – Ensuring your shoes properly support your ankle and foot function

Every treatment plan is personalised based on your assessment findings and lifestyle needs

Causes & Risk Factors

Ankle pain often develops due to one or more of the following:

Ankle sprains causing ligament damage and instability
Tendon problems such as Achilles tendonitis or posterior tibial tendon dysfunction (PTTD)
Arthritis leading to joint stiffness and reduced mobility
Overuse or repetitive strain from walking, running, or standing for long periods
Poor footwear lacking proper support or stability
Biomechanical issues such as flat feet or poor gait mechanics

Identifying the root cause is key to preventing ongoing pain and repeat injuries.

What causes ankle pain?

Sprains, tendonitis, arthritis, overuse, or poor foot mechanics can cause ankle pain. Early assessment by a specialist can help identify the root cause and prevent long-term issues.

Seek professional help if you experience swelling, bruising, instability, or persistent pain that affects walking. Specialist care ensures the right treatment plan for faster recovery.

Some mild ankle pain may improve with rest or home care, but untreated injuries or biomechanical issues can lead to chronic problems. Early intervention with therapy or orthotics usually gives better results.

A specialist will examine your ankle, assess range of motion, and review your medical history. Imaging or gait analysis may be used if needed, ensuring a personalised treatment plan including Shockwave Therapy, K-Laser, or orthotics.

Treatment depends on the cause and may include:

  • Focused Shockwave Therapy
  • K-Laser Therapy
  • Custom orthotic insoles
  • Strengthening and mobility exercises

A combined approach often leads to faster recovery and longer-lasting relief.

Recovery varies. Minor sprains may improve within a few weeks, while chronic tendon or ligament issues may take longer. Patients following a professional plan usually recover faster than those relying on home remedies alone.

Low-impact activities are usually safe, but high-impact exercise or prolonged standing may need adjustment. A structured plan helps maintain mobility while supporting healing.

Custom insoles correct foot mechanics, reduce strain on the ankle, and help prevent recurring pain. They are especially useful for patients with chronic or recurring ankle problems.

These therapies are most effective for stubborn or chronic ankle pain. A specialist assessment determines which therapy is best for your specific condition.

See a specialist if your pain lasts more than a week, worsens with activity, or interferes with daily life. Early assessment ensures the most effective treatment and reduces the risk of long-term issues.

Ronnie Mbwana did a fabulous job for me today. He gently treated my damaged toenail, cut my nails, removed hard skin and provided a thorough checkup. The service provided by him and the receptionist throughout was excellent. I highly recommend this practice.

I had an appointment with Ronnie 6 weeks ago, and again today for a follow up appointment.
I had an ingrown toenail which I had left way too long and had become infected. I finally plucked up the courage to visit We Fix Feet in Ilkeston. My only regret is not visiting sooner! Ronnie was able to remove the portion of ingrown toenail at my first appointment, and within a day or two, my nail was perfect. After hiding my feet for many years I finally have a healthy set of toenails and have treated myself to my first ever pair of open toe sandals! All the staff here are wonderful, professional and very reassuring for which I am very grateful. Thank you
