What Is a Fungal Nail Infection?

Fungal nail infections (onychomycosis) occur when fungi invade the nail or nail bed, often thriving in warm, moist environments. They can enter through small cracks, trauma, or nail separation, and are difficult to treat without professional care.

Common Symptoms:
• Discoloured nails (white, yellow, brown, or black)
• Thickened or overgrown nails
• Brittle, crumbly, or ragged edges
• Distorted or misshapen nails
• Nail lifting from the nail bed
• Foul odour in advanced cases

• Oral antifungal medication when clinically indicated
• Foot hygiene and footwear guidance to prevent reinfection

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about Fungal Nails

What are fungal nails?

Fungal nails (onychomycosis) are infections of the nail caused by fungi. They commonly affect toenails, leading to thickened, discoloured, brittle, or crumbly nails.

Symptoms include discoloured nails (yellow, white, or brown), thickening, brittleness, splitting or crumbling, lifting of the nail from the nail bed, and sometimes mild discomfort or odor.

Some mild pain may improve with rest or simple home care, but untreated conditions often worsen. Professional treatment addresses the root cause for faster, long-lasting relief.

A clinician will assess your foot structure, gait, muscle strength, and posture. Imaging may be used if needed. This ensures a personalised treatment plan, including therapies like K-Laser, Shockwave, or orthotics.

Treatment depends on the cause and may include:

  • K-Laser Therapy for inflammation and for pain relief
  • Shockwave Therapy for chronic tendon or soft tissue pain
  • Custom orthotics to correct foot mechanics
  • Stretching and strengthening exercises

A combined approach often gives the best results.

Recovery varies based on the condition. Mild cases can improve in a few weeks, while chronic conditions may take several months. Patients following a professional treatment plan typically recover faster.

Low-impact activities are usually safe, but high-impact exercise or prolonged standing may need adjustment. A personalised plan helps maintain mobility while healing.

Custom insoles support the arches, reduce strain, and improve foot mechanics. Many patients experience reduced pain and lower risk of recurrence when combined with therapy.

These therapies are most effective for persistent or chronic foot pain. A professional assessment will determine the best therapy for your specific condition.

See a specialist if your pain lasts more than a week, worsens with activity, or interferes with daily life. Early assessment and treatment often prevent long-term problems.

Ronnie Mbwana did a fabulous job for me today. He gently treated my damaged toenail, cut my nails, removed hard skin and provided a thorough checkup. The service provided by him and the receptionist throughout was excellent. I highly recommend this practice.

I had an appointment with Ronnie 6 weeks ago, and again today for a follow up appointment.
I had an ingrown toenail which I had left way too long and had become infected. I finally plucked up the courage to visit We Fix Feet in Ilkeston. My only regret is not visiting sooner! Ronnie was able to remove the portion of ingrown toenail at my first appointment, and within a day or two, my nail was perfect. After hiding my feet for many years I finally have a healthy set of toenails and have treated myself to my first ever pair of open toe sandals! All the staff here are wonderful, professional and very reassuring for which I am very grateful. Thank you
