COMMON QUESTIONS
We get asked a lot
How soon after surgery can I start rehabilitation with you?
We typically begin working with patients from 1–2 weeks post-surgery, once the surgical wound is stable and your surgeon has cleared you for physiotherapy input. You don’t need to wait until you’re walking freely — the earlier we see you, the better your outcome tends to be.
Do I need a GP or consultant referral to book?
No. You can self-refer directly by calling either of our clinics. If you’d like us to liaise with your GP or surgical consultant, we’re happy to do so — but it’s not a requirement to start.
Can I come to you if I’m already receiving NHS physiotherapy?
Absolutely. Many of our patients supplement their NHS care with sessions here, particularly to access the AlterG treadmill which is rarely available through NHS physiotherapy services. We’ll work in complement with — not in conflict with — any existing rehab programme.
Is the AlterG treadmill suitable for me if I’m in significant pain?
Yes — in fact, this is exactly what the AlterG is designed for. By reducing the weight going through your knee to as low as 20%, we can get you moving in a pain-managed way that’s not possible on a standard treadmill. Many patients find their first sessions genuinely pain-free for the first time since surgery.
How many sessions will I need?
This varies depending on your surgery, age, fitness level, and goals. Most knee replacement patients complete a programme over 12–16 weeks with 1–2 clinic sessions per week. We’ll give you a clear estimate at your initial assessment.
What’s included in the initial assessment?
Your first session (60 minutes) covers a full review of your surgical history, current pain and function levels, gait analysis, strength and range of motion testing, and a discussion of your goals. You’ll leave with a draft recovery plan and a clear picture of what the next weeks will look like.
Don’t leave your recovery to chance.
The 6–12 weeks after knee surgery are the most critical window for your long-term outcome. Make them count with expert, technology-led rehabilitation.
