Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about Verruca

What is a verruca?

A verruca is a small, rough growth on the sole of the foot caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). It can be painful when walking or standing and is contagious.

Verrucas often appear as small, grainy bumps with tiny black dots (clotted blood vessels) in the centre. Pain when pressure is applied to the area is a common symptom.

Verrucas are caused by HPV, which can be contracted through small cuts or abrasions on the feet, often from walking barefoot in communal areas such as swimming pools or gyms.

Some verrucas may disappear naturally over months or even years. However, persistent verrucas often require treatment to relieve pain and prevent spreading to others.

Treatment options include:

  • K-Laser Therapy to reduce viral activity and pain
  • Verrutop
  • Surgical needling of the verruca
  • Painful Microwave treatment
  • Acid-based treatments
  • Advice on foot hygiene and protection

Professional assessment ensures the most effective treatment is chosen.

Recovery time varies depending on size and severity. Many verrucas respond to treatment within a few weeks, while stubborn or chronic cases may take several months.

Yes. Verrucas are contagious. Avoid sharing towels, walking barefoot in communal areas, and touching the verruca to prevent spreading. Professional treatment also reduces this risk

K-Laser Therapy is especially effective for stubborn verrucas. It vaporizes infected tissue, stimulates natural immune response to the virus and can speed up healing compared to some home remedies.

See a specialist if your verruca is painful, persistent, or spreading, or if home treatments haven’t worked. Early professional care can relieve pain, reduce treatment time, and prevent recurrence.

Ronnie Mbwana did a fabulous job for me today. He gently treated my damaged toenail, cut my nails, removed hard skin and provided a thorough checkup. The service provided by him and the receptionist throughout was excellent. I highly recommend this practice.

I had an appointment with Ronnie 6 weeks ago, and again today for a follow up appointment.
I had an ingrown toenail which I had left way too long and had become infected. I finally plucked up the courage to visit We Fix Feet in Ilkeston. My only regret is not visiting sooner! Ronnie was able to remove the portion of ingrown toenail at my first appointment, and within a day or two, my nail was perfect. After hiding my feet for many years I finally have a healthy set of toenails and have treated myself to my first ever pair of open toe sandals! All the staff here are wonderful, professional and very reassuring for which I am very grateful. Thank you
